Oldsmobile has been associated with General Motors for the majority of its life; however, it was actually founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. The Oldsmobile cars were created by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company out of Lansing Michigan. In 1901 there were 425 cars produced by this plant. This was the first time American had seen a high volume of cars being manufactured by any automobile company.
In a few short years, the Olds Motor Company was the top selling car company in all of the United States. However, Ransom Olds left the company, which was having financial problems and established the REO Motor Car Company. He sold the Olds Company in 1899 which was renamed Olds Motor Works.
The curved dash oldsmobiles were last created in 1907. The Curved Dash has the title of being the first mass-produced car created entirely on an assembly line.
1910 was a good year for the Oldsmobiles as the Limited Touring was created. This unique automobile had 42-inch wheels with “white” factory tires. At this time, the Limited retailed for $4,600, which during this time was the equivalent, or more than a person would pay for a three bedroom home. The Limited was only sold for three years with only 725 sold, the car still has fond memories for many especially when they recall that it won a race against the 20th Century Limited train.
1937 brought us the four speed semi-automatic transmission from Oldsmobile named “Automatic Safety Transmission.” In actuality, the transmission was built by Buick, but Oldsmobile was the one to introduce it to the public first. Buick did not use the transmission until 1938.
The fully automatic transmission named Hydramatic with four forward speeds was introduced in 1940. The last car prior to World War II was the created on February 5, 1942. During the war, Oldsmobile manufactured various parts for the war effort including shells and caliber guns.
The unique and awesome name of Oldsmobile was phased out in 2004 after a 107-year history. Oldsmobile at the time of its end was the oldest surviving American automobile marquee and one of the oldest in the world.
