The history of Dodge really begins with the Dodge Brothers Bicycle and Machine Factory in Windsor Ontario. The two brothers, John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge moved their factory to Detroit, Michigan in 1901. After their move, they worked to create bearings, parts, and even helped in designing the early Oldsmobile’s.
In 1902, Henry Ford contacted them for help in financing his automobile manufacturing company. They of course, aiding in the financial end of the Ford Motor Company and manufactured parts for the early fords. In 1913, practically all the chassis, suspension, brakes, transmissions, engines, and other running gear were manufactured solely by the Doge brothers.
1914, was the beginning of the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. The first car off the assembly line in 1914 was introduced as “Old Betsy.” During 1914, there were 249 new cars built.
During 1917, the Dodge brothers filed a lawsuit against Ford. Henry Ford, sought to end special dividends for shareholders in favor of massive investments in new plants, which in essence he was trying to turn his company into a charity. However, the Dodge brothers owned 10% of the Ford Motor Company and was the largest shareholders. In the end, the Dodge brothers won quite a large settlement.
1917 was also the year in which the motor truck was born. These dodge motor trucks were mainly used by the United States during World War I.
The Dillon, Read, and Company purchased the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company for $148 million dollars, which at the time was the largest cash transaction. However, on July 31, 1928, Dillon, Read, and Company sold Dodge to the Chrysler Corporation.
Today, Dodge is available in several countries throughout the world. DaimlerChrysler reached an agreement earlier this spring of 2007 with Cerberus Capital Management L.P. to sell its Chrysler Group subsidiary and Dodge is in this division.
