Chevrolet is an American automobile manufacturer now under the General Motors Corporation. Chevrolet is commonly referred to as Chevy and one of the most popular styles of cars in the United States during the 1950’s.
Chevrolet Motor Company was created in November of 1911 by Louis Chevrolet, William Little, and William Durant with headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.
Durant at one time was in control of General Motors. He incorporated the Chevrolet Motor Company of Delaware on September 13, 1915, which included the Chevrolet Motor Company and other automobile companies that Durant had put together after losing control of General Motors.
In 1916, Chevrolet owned 54.5 percent of the General Motors outstanding shares. At this time, Durant was able to take over the presidency of General Motors from Charles W. Nash.
General Motors purchases the operating property of Chevrolet Motor Company in 1918. 1921 new technology was used which was the hope to replace the traditional piston engines. General Motors replaced this piston engine with a copper cooled engine in every Chevrolet on the market. This only lasted until 1923 with the production of only 800 cars and all recalled by General Motors.
In 1923, the first General Motors European assembly plant was opened in Copenhagen with the name General Motors International A/S. The plant was to build only Chevrolets to be sold in Scandinavian countries, the Baltics, and Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary and Russia. the first vehicle produced from this plant was the Chevrolet utility truck on January 7, 1924.
Some of the most remarkable advances of Chevrolet include the six-cylinder engine for commercial vehicles in 1929, the Suburban Carryall ½-ton truck in 1935, and the powerglide transmission in 1950.
