When Shelby retired in October of 1959, he opened a high performance driving school named Shelby-American. While he was teaching, he was also designing the first Cobra. He used parts such as the chassis from an AC car and Ford engines. Shelby designed such cars as the GT40, The Shelby GT350, the Shelby GT500, and the 427 Shelby Cobra.
