After the Henry Ford Company dissolved, the equipment was to be sold, however, the financial backers, William Murphy and Lemuel Brown asked engineer Henry M. Leland to appraise the plant and all of the equipment before the sell. With Leland suggestion, they continued in the automobile industry with Leland’s 1-cylinder engine. However, since Henry Ford was no longer in the picture they needed a new name for their company.

They came up with the name Cadillac after the 17th century French explore Antoine Laurnet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac whom was the founder of Detroit, Michigan in 1701. On August 22, 1902, the Cadillac Automobile Company was founded.

Cadillac changed the way in which people saw vehicles. With the advance engineering, luxury, and style society saw one of the finest made vehicles on the market. In 1908, Cadillac manufactured interchangeable parts. Cadillac was the first car manufacture to create cars with a fully enclosed cab in 1910. In 1912, Cadillac introduced the standard electric engine and lighting. In 1914, Cadillac unveiled the first production V8 engine. In 1927, they were the first car manufacturer to hire a designer to produce the body of their cars instead of an engineer. This one thing changed the car industry and gave consumers a car that looked as great as it performed.

Cadillac has given us the first manual transmission with synchronizers in 1929 and aided in the production of the automatic transmission in 1932. From 1930 until 1940, Cadillac offered a V-16 engine and during this time in 1934 unveiled the independent wishbone front suspension.

The very first automobile off the Cadillac assembly line was the 10 ho Cadillac which was first seen in October 1902. It was almost identical to the 1903 Ford Model A.

In 1909, Cadillac was purchased by the General Motors Company, thus the prestigious line for General Motors began. The Cadillac line was devoted to the production of the large luxury cars, which included ambulances, hearses, funeral home flower cars, and limousines.

1911 was a breakthrough for all car manufacturers as Cadillac introduced the first gasoline internal combustion engine to work with an electric start instead of using a crank like other earlier models.

In 1932, Cadillac almost bit the dust. Joe Louis the famous boxer of the time was not allowed to go into a Cadillac dealership to purchase a car since he was black. He requested a white friend of his to purchase the car on his behalf. The president of Cadillac at the time, Nicholas Dreystadt heard about this injustice and gave a speech to the GM Board of Directors concerning advertising to black consumers to increase sales. After two years of changing policies and advertising, Cadillac was back on track and sales were increasing.
